In November 2019, The Flying Hero Club charity, along with Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, invited 30 of Cathartic’s young service users to experience a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. The young people were given the chance to go to the film studios and fly 100ft on the rig used by stunt coordinators in the big blockbuster movies! The day was a special event for young people living with additional needs, and their families, to be treated to an action-packed day, to forget the challenges of everyday life. The day was filled to the brim with magic! There was face painting, BBQ, famous superhero memorabilia (including the real Batmobile!), capes, masks, goodie bags…and even guest appearances from Tom Hardy and Tom Cruise. The day will live on in the hearts of many as ‘the BEST day ever!’…we are SO lucky that our young service users and their families could enjoy such a brilliant event!
My name is Jim Churchman, creator of the Flying Hero Club. My 25-year career as a Stunt Coordinator includes some of Hollywood's biggest blockbuster superhero movies, where I specialized in making performers fly. Now I want to share that feeling with young people who can benefit from the experience the most.
The crew is some of the most skilled, compassionate people on the planet. We have traveled the world together, fought through low moments, bonded during high moments, and forged friendships for life. When I told them what I want to do - every single one jumped at the opportunity to spread some love through our craft.
The Flying Hero Club will set up a computerized flying system, the same system that has flown the likes of: Kate Beckinsale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, and more. The kids will then be flown on a bellyboard, where they are free to act like their favorite superheroes. If they cannot lie on a bellyboard, we can pick them up, right in their wheelchair! We want every able little warrior to enjoy the power of flight! They will fly approximately 100 feet across a given location, at around 4 feet high. We will start them slow and increase the fun according to their comfort level.
